RECENT HISTORY
The Fire Island Voters Association held its first anti-road
conference at the clubhouse during the time Robert Moses wanted to
build a road through Fire Island, similar to the Ocean Parkway
through Jones Beach. Fortunately for all of us, this plan was never
implemented.
In 1997, under the leadership of Ms. Ruth Lungen, President for over
10 years, stewardship changed from Dune Realty Corp., the
association entity then governing the club, converting to the Summer
Club Condominium. This gave all members far greater rights accorded
to a condominium, including especially direct land ownership, as
opposed to the earlier association which more resembled a
co-operative. The current president is Gary Eckstein, elected in
2000.
We have seen dynamic growth and changes in our community. Therefore
we would like to document as best we can the history of all 40 homes
in Summer Club. This information is current as of July, 2007.
